Ozeaneum Stralsund: Marine Worlds from Sand Flea to Blue Whale
The Ozeaneum Stralsund combines large aquariums, Humboldt penguins, a dedicated children’s area and life-size whales into a family-friendly museum experience on the Baltic Sea.

Anyone who first thinks of beaches, wind and a wide horizon when it comes to the Baltic Sea will discover a completely different side of the ocean at the Ozeaneum Stralsund. Here, the world beneath the surface takes center stage. Impressive aquariums, clear exhibitions and many opportunities for observation make the museum a destination that fascinates adults and children alike.
As you move through the museum, the diversity of marine life quickly becomes apparent. From tiny sand fleas to the largest sea creatures, the Ozeaneum spans a wide arc and shows in an accessible way how surprising and multi-layered underwater worlds can be. This mix of knowledge, hands-on experience and wonder is what makes a visit so appealing.
The “Open Atlantic” as a central highlight
The largest tank in the museum is particularly striking. The “Open Atlantic” holds 2.6 million liters of seawater and opens up a broad panorama of life in the ocean. Schools of fish move through the water, while sharks and rays glide past in a calm rhythm. Large viewing windows allow visitors to follow the action at their own pace. It quickly creates the feeling of being very close to the sea.
This area often captivates families for quite some time. Children linger in front of the glass, discover new animals again and again and start asking questions almost by themselves.
Humboldt penguins on the rooftop terrace
Another popular part of the Ozeaneum is located on the rooftop terrace. Humboldt penguins live here with a view of the UNESCO World Heritage city of Stralsund. This combination of animal watching and city skyline gives the visit a special atmosphere.
The view of the penguins on land is only part of the experience. Large windows also allow a look underwater. Only there does it become clear how fast and graceful the animals are in the water. Impressions like these stay with many visitors for a long time.
“1:1 Giants of the Sea” with life-size whales
Towards the end of the tour, the perspective shifts once more. In the “1:1 Giants of the Sea” exhibition, models of whales and other ocean giants hang suspended through the full height of the hall. Their life-size presentation makes the dimensions of these animals easy to grasp.
The largest exhibit is a 26-meter blue whale. Standing in front of it, you gain a very real sense of how immense life in the ocean can be. The staging is powerful yet calm and almost reverent, creating an atmospheric finale to the visit.
Family-friendly excursion in Stralsund
Since 2009, the Ozeaneum has carried the “Familienurlaub MV – Geprüfte Qualität” quality seal from the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Tourist Board and it was certified again in 2021. This shows how consistently the museum caters to families.
The “Kindermeer” experience area offers younger visitors plenty of room to explore and play. A lighthouse with a slide, beach chairs and other play options ensure that children also enjoy their time at the museum.
Anyone spending their holiday in a holiday home in Mecklenburg can easily plan a day trip to Stralsund. The Ozeaneum combines maritime experiences, family-focused attractions and the special charm of this Hanseatic city. This turns a single day out into one of the highlights of the entire holiday.
