Experience the birdlife of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in autumn

With autumn, the atmosphere of the landscape in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern also changes. Large flocks of birds move across fields, meadows and wetlands, and their calls are, for many people, an essential part of this season. Wild geese in particular now shape the scene. They stop here on their way to wintering grounds in southern Europe or stay in the region until spring.

For nature lovers this is a special experience every year. The wide, open spaces of the state offer ideal conditions for watching migratory birds. It is especially in the colder months that the importance of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern as a resting and wintering area becomes clear.

When thousands of wild geese rest in the fields

From October onwards, many places become audibly and visibly livelier. Large groups of wild geese gather in the fields to take a break on their journey. The bean goose is one of them. Some of these birds move on, others spend the entire winter in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. As a result, the bustling activity often lasts from autumn well into spring.

Together with northern Brandenburg and northwestern Poland, the region is one of the most important wintering areas for wild geese from Siberia. Around three quarters of these birds spend the winter here. This shows how important this landscape is for bird conservation.

Rare species and vulnerable populations

Among the geese you will find not only more common species, but also birds that have become rare, such as the taiga bean goose. This makes watching them especially exciting, but also sensitive. Threatened species like the taiga bean goose and the highly endangered lesser white-fronted goose are often hard to distinguish from other geese.

This is where a problem arises. Time and again, protected or particularly threatened birds accidentally end up in the sights of hunters. In addition, the bean goose may still be legally hunted in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, even though its population has declined significantly since 1980. In Brandenburg, bean geese are already protected all year round. This is why animal welfare groups and ornithologists in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are also calling for stronger protection.

Why the birdlife in the north is so captivating

Bird migration in the north is more than a natural spectacle. It shows how closely landscape, seasons and wildlife are connected. Anyone who has seen large flocks crossing the sky or thousands of geese gathering on harvested fields understands why these birds are often described as nomads of the air.

Alongside the geese, cranes are among the species that attract many visitors to the region. Hardly any other bird is so closely associated with autumn in the north. The title of this article also mentions the rhea, which repeatedly draws attention in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Yet even the autumn migration of geese and cranes alone is an impressive reminder of how diverse and characteristic the state’s birdlife is.

Natural spectacle and responsibility

For holidaymakers, birdwatchers and locals, autumn is therefore a particularly rewarding time. Watching the birds offers not only striking encounters, but also sharpens awareness of the value of intact habitats. For many migratory birds, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is no coincidence, but an essential part of their annual cycle.

Anyone who experiences the birdlife here does not just see an impressive natural scene, but also its vulnerability. This is precisely what makes the autumn flocks so special. They are fascinating and full of life, and at the same time a quiet reminder of how important protection and consideration are in these landscapes.
